I was referred by my doctor in August, saw the consultant in September and went in for my operation in early November. I was slightly nervous about the operation, but the consultant seemed to explain the whole proceedings in a clear and concise manner without being patronising or being too technical, which mere mortals like me wouldn't understand.
I didn't look at the internet or read up on the operation, as I thought I would only read about personal experience and I should go at my own pace during recovery, and reading this may even hamper me (as I may make comparisons).
I went in for my op and was seen by the anaesthetist, who was excellent in calming me, as I have a fear of needles. He suggested the best course would be a general anaesthetic and not epidural. The operation went swimmingly, the aftercare was exceptional by all staff. I honestly could not have asked for more caring, keen and knowledgeable nursing staff.
Physio started the day after the operation, which was tough at first but gets easier with time, and I was allowed home after my op three days later.
I have been for my six weeks after op follow up with the consultant and to see the physio today to add a couple more exercises. Both the physiologist and consultant listened to my moanings and groanings on the matter and have definitely reassured me with their knowledge. The advice given to me by an outpatient I spoke to before my op has continously been ringing in my ears throughout my recovery....that you have to be patient, listen to the experts and do as you're asked. It's for a short period of your life and will last you a lifetime if you follow their good advice. All in all, to have an operation that nobody chooses to have (but is necessary) and to have fond memories of it due to excellent staff care, certainly makes the recovery period a much pleasurable experience. Thank you all.
