"No sedation for colonoscopy"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Endoscopy

(as a relative),

My mother recently attended for outpatient colonoscopy after a positive screening test. On arrival to the department my mother was met by the endoscopist and she explained she felt very anxious and would like to be sedated. She was cannulated and had something administered she assumed this was the sedation, soon after she was taken in for her test asked to lie on her side but did not feel any different. She told the attending nurse who asked her to stay calm, the endoscopist carried on with the procedure even with my mothers concerns heard! During the procedure she was in extreme pain and discomfort as the scope was advanced! She heard the endoscopist telling the nurse “she needs to relax she is too tense” trying not to cause a fuss my mother tried to remain still and allow the test to continue in great pain almost in tears! I find the lack of care and compassion is awful, the patient in this case my mother was not listened to, her pain was not managed and she was undersedated. She was told the test was normal, however if she was identified for future test similar to this she would not attend as a result of her experience even though it could be life saving.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear aurigabe37,

I am so sorry that your mum's experience was painful. We do want everyone to take follow-up tests when necessary so we can eliminate disease where possible. Most conditions are treatable when caught early so it is very concerning that your mum feels this way about any future (potential) colonoscopy. I wonder if your mum would like to talk this through with a senior member of staff. I think that we also need to learn from this. It may be that sedation was not possible for your mum for some reason, but if that was the case, this should have been thoroughly explained.

If your mum would like to talk to a senior member of staff, I can arrange that. My contact details are Eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk and 01563 826222.

On the plus side, I am glad your mum's result is good.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Should your mum contact me, I hope we can alleviate any concerns for future colonoscopies.

Again, may I say how sorry I am that your mum's experience was less than optimal and fell short of our aspirations for our service.

Kind regards,

Eunice
