"Simply not enough care"

About: The Tunbridge Wells Hospital / A&E and trauma unit

My elderly parents both arrived together at a&e after an accident. They arrived very confused, bleeding, in pain & in shock & later discovered chipped vertebraes. If it wasn’t for the very attentive reception staff, it seemed they would have been left waiting for a very long time. The triage nurse who first examined them was extremely curt & abrupt at a time when they were both clearly in shock & needed kindness, however, realising the severity of the situation, especially with my fathers serious heart condition, rushed them through. After being administered pain relief, scan & glued wounds, my father was wheeled in a bed into a corridor by a toilet, whilst my mother was just left to stand in the corridor, with a bleeding head. When I asked a nurse for a chair for my mother, they shrugged & said there weren’t any. They had to wait over 3 hours in that corridor & no one checked on either of them, They were exhausted, hungry & thirsty.

I love the NHS, I know how utterly lucky we are to have such a wonderful health service. I completely understand how over stretched a&e can be & I know that there is always a lot of waiting as it is such a busy department. However, it broke my heart how little care there was. My parents had a truly horrible experience from the moment of their accident, to the moment they came home from the hospital.

Thank you for leaving a review of your recent experience of the Emergency Department.

We were very sorry to learn of your parents' accident and apologise that they did not receive the expected standard of care.

Unfortunately, the department has been extremely busy in the last week and at times, patients have experienced longer waiting times than we would like.

If you would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01892 632953 or email mtw-tr.palsoffice@nhs.net, where a member of staff will be happy to help.

With kind regards, The PALS Team.
