"Miscarriage (suspected)"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

i woke up and went to the toilet, when i wiped there was blood on the tissue, i called NHS24 and explained my situation and was told it was common and not to worry. Later that night i went to the toilet again and had blood on the tissue when i wiped again. I then rang NHS24 again and was eventually asked to go into Kingscross Hospital after a lot of begging on the phone for someone to see me. When i got there a doctor took my blood pressure, temperature, felt my tummy and said "it still feels soft" he then asked for a urine sample which i provided and he tested it for UTI which there was no UTI just blood in the urine with a very small clot, From this alone he was somehow able to diagnose a possible miscarriage (bear in mind i was only bleeding when i wiped- no blood in-between), i was given no cervix exam, no blood tests, no scans nothing. i was then told to go home and call EPU in the morning, i did this and was told to do a pregnancy test again in 3 weeks and to phone back if it was positive. So i now have a stressful 3 week wait of uncertainty and worry with no proper tests done.

The Maternity team phoned me and asked if i had gotten an appointment with EPU, i explained i had been told to do a test in 3 weeks and they asked if i was still bleeding heavily, i explained i hadn't had any heavy bleeding and it was only when i wiped. I was then asked what the outcome of the cervical exam was, again i explained i hadn't been offered a cervical exam, she then told me to take a test in 1 week and if it was positive to call them back. Today the bleeding has gotten no heavier and still only when i wipe after using the toilet, cramps are mild and have no other pains.

I would like to know why i was not offered any conclusive testing? as far as I'm aware a Urine test cannot diagnose a miscarriage. I would be 6 weeks pregnant. Can anyone help?

I am sorry to hear of your experience. I recognise that the uncertainty caused by bleeding in early pregnancy can be very distressing; however NHS 24 is correct when they say that bleeding in early pregnancy is very common.

Unfortunately prior to 6 weeks pregnancy, there is no conclusive testing that we can offer. Even ultrasound scanning at this stage is not reliable. You are correct when you say that a urine test cannot diagnose a miscarriage and I apologise if this was not made clear to you. It also would not be routine care to perform a cervical examination at this stage of pregnancy.

The correct advice is to wait for one week and repeat the pregnancy test. If the test is positive at that point please contact the early pregnancy unit on 01382 632069. It is also important that you call if during this time, the bleeding increases, or you are in pain.

I would be happy to discuss this with you if you would like to contact me on 01382 740206 Ext 34676 or 07814141233 (mobile).

Update posted by hydraxd48 (the patient)

But i was just over 6 weeks so shouldnt i have been offered conclussive testing of some sort? Iv barely had any bleeding since that night and even that night it was maybe half a teaspoonful at most and since then only bleeding sometimes when i wipe (no blood inbetween) infact in the last 4 days altogether since then iv not bled enough to fill a pad let alone heavy bleeding.
