I am a profoundly deaf 35 year old single mother who found myself unexpectedly having to be admitted into the hospital after developing a severe abscess in my jaw from a Wisdom tooth extraction!
Not only did I find myself extremely unwell and alarmed at having to leave my child, I was also frightened at having to go back into hospital again six months after a Cochlear Implant operation. The staff during my stay were amazing. I only had what I turned up in yet they bent over backwards to make me feel comfortable, safe, reassured and adapted to my communication needs with a lot of patience. They even found me a charger so I could text my son. If it were not for the staff, I do not think I would have found myself brave enough to go into surgery again.
It was very humbling and heart warming to see a mix of talented people, different nationalities and different skill sets all working together to give me the best care they could. All these different accents accompanied beaming smiles. They approached their jobs with humour and professionalism yet made me feel truly cared for. I knew I would be okay with them.
I feel extraordinarily proud of our NHS Staff. I cannot thank them enough and I feel very lucky and blessed to be at home with my son, recovering with the Christmas tree up and it is all thanks to these people, who they are and the sacrifices they and their families make.
I wish all the staff at QA a very Merry Christmas xx
