"Dad did not want to leave"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Elderly Medicine (Wards 51, 52, 54,55, 57, 8a & 2a)

(as a relative),

My dad was admitted to hospital in November in  a confused state.   His family knew he had been confused and forgetful for sometime, but dad had always denied this.   As a result the admission was a stressful time for all of us.   The A & E staff reassured dad and he settled down.   Later he was transferred to Ward 52 within the hospital.   Here he was diagnosed with dementia and the great care he received from all staff within the ward has certainly contributed to him being able to understand the nature of his illness and the way forward.   He was treated with dignity and kept fully informed of his medical progress.   At first he was angry and frustrated and sometimes we visited in a nervous state never quite knowing how dad would be.   The nurse were great at calming him down and allowing and encouraging him to mix with other patients.   So much so, that he did not want to leave.

Dear CEM

Many thanks for your post on Care Opinion.

I am sorry about your Dad’s dementia diagnosis.

Being admitted to hospital can be a stressful time for the patient and their families and I pleased that the A&E staff were able to reassure your Dad and help settle him.

I am delighted to read about the great care your Dad received in Ward 52, and that the staff were able to help your Dad understand his diagnosis and the way forward. The fact that your Dad did not want to leave says a lot about the care and the staff.

I will make sure that we share your post with Senior Charge Nurse Mulrooney and the staff in Ward 52 and the staff in A&E.

Please pass on my best wishes to your Dad.

Kind Regards

Nicole
