"Genuinely the worst maternity unit I’ve..."

About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

I intend to follow this review up with a complaint directly to the department however I wanted to share my experience of the staff within the department.

I visited a friend who’d given birth on the unit a couple of days prior.

On discovering her in a distressed state I informed the nurses who were congregated around the nurse station and asked if someone could check her over.

One of the few nurses who actually acknowledged me stated they would send someone in five minute. We waited for 15 minutes before a nurse entered the room. At this point my friend looked close to collapsing.

The nurse seemed annoyed that they had been asked to assist us and made a point of making visitors feel unwelcome and intrusive.

I work within the NHS myself and found their attitude and conduct deplorable.

The experience was spoilt by the attitude of someone who, from my opinion, took exception at being asked to simply provide care.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am very sorry to read your review, this behaviour isn’t what we would expect to happen in any of our hospitals. As part of our usual practice I will share your review with our senior midwifery team but we would really like the opportunity to look into this further. With your friends permission please could you send us her details, full name, address and date of birth, our email address is Patient.Experience@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk.

Please accept our apologies and we look forward to hearing from you soon,

Jan
