"The care of my mother"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Hospital at Home University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My 90 year old mother was sent home from Wishaw hospital late at night unable to weight bare and in agony. She did not have a fractured femur as was suspected but no one felt it necessary to refer on to find out what was causing this severe pain. My mother was a fit and active 90year old. There was no follow up for abnormal blood results either and no phone call to GP as we were advised would happen. A few days later she was referred to the Hospital at home service. I fail to understand how they can use this terminology as if this is the standard of care expected to be given in hospital then God help us all. My mother would have been left to die in pain had we (3 nurses and a Doctor. Family members) not intervened. It turns out she had gallstones, a completely treatable problem. This took far too long to sort out, she lost 2 stones as was unable to eat/drink due to severe pain and the family had to provide 24 hour care as she was so unwell.

I feel that NHS Lanarkshire has been ageist. If my mother was younger she would have been treated differently.

I would like to try and resolve this as my brother is considering a full complaint with legal action as I feel my mother has suffered due to her poor treatment and severe lack of communication. I feel that this is not an isolated incident and I would very much like to prevent other people experiencing our ordeal.

Dear 8

Thank you for getting in touch. My colleagues and I are dismayed to read about your mother’s experience of our services and we are sorry you feel that we did not provide adequate treatment. We would be keen to meet with you and your family to try to fully understand the circumstances and address the issues you have raised.

Could you please contact my Patient Affairs Department on 01698 366558 to provide more detail in the first instance, as you’ve mentioned a few different departments. Once this is done we’ll be able to review some of the circumstances and ensure we arrange a meeting with the most appropriate staff.

I hope your mother is comfortable and recovering from her gallstones.

Kind Regards,

Gillian
