"Day versus night care on Fleming Ward, City..."

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Respiratory medicine

My Mum was admitted to Morton Ward and then Fleming at the end of November before sadly passing away on the 28th.

The care on both wards through the day was fantastic and the staff on Fleming could not have done more for my Mum, who was quite distressed and confused at times. The doctors were patient, honest and open and always had time to speak to me and my Dad.

The transition from day to night however was poorly handled. We were told that my Mum would receive a further blood test at 7pm and then at 8pm. If no improvement was shown, she would be made comfortable and would receive end of life care. 8pm came and went and at 8.45pm, I enquired when the test would be carried out. The night nurse did not seem to have received the information and was not overly interested. A doctor only appeared when I expressed how unhappy I was.

I appreciate the constraints the service works under but it's wrong to leave patients and relatives hanging in what is essentially a life and death situation.

My condolences on your loss. I’m sorry that our communication and continuity of care between the day and night was poor. It would be useful to have some additional information so that I can look into your concern in more detail. Mindful this is a difficult time for you and your family, you can contact me anytime on 0115 969 1169 ext. 55270 or emma.nicholson@nuh.nhs.uk.

I have also shared your comments with the team on Morton ward.

Best wishes,

Emma Nicholson.

Ward Manager, Fleming Ward.
