My Mum was admitted to Morton Ward and then Fleming at the end of November before sadly passing away on the 28th.
The care on both wards through the day was fantastic and the staff on Fleming could not have done more for my Mum, who was quite distressed and confused at times. The doctors were patient, honest and open and always had time to speak to me and my Dad.
The transition from day to night however was poorly handled. We were told that my Mum would receive a further blood test at 7pm and then at 8pm. If no improvement was shown, she would be made comfortable and would receive end of life care. 8pm came and went and at 8.45pm, I enquired when the test would be carried out. The night nurse did not seem to have received the information and was not overly interested. A doctor only appeared when I expressed how unhappy I was.
I appreciate the constraints the service works under but it's wrong to leave patients and relatives hanging in what is essentially a life and death situation.
