"Very inept and disorganised discharge"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

I went in 30th November for a 2nd Knee replacement with a surgeon who was superb and theatre staff also ! The surgeon said i could go home the next day on their ward round .but physio and medical staff told me no .So Sat came and said i would be discharged as soon as i got my meds was ready and packed at 1pm by 5pm my meds had not come from pharmacy then nurse asked me if i had an xray and bloods done! No i said they looked agast (should have been done the day before a staff member should have had it done) so they had to book an emergancy xray,Eeventually i had it done at 7pm still had no meds from pharmacy they are inept. So i had leave without them the nurse did say it was the blind leading the blind .We had to get my son to go back for them next day and we live in Halifax ! My anxiety is bad anyway but the whole process was very distressing fo me and my wife.I shall never use the BRI again and stick to halifax this is just a short complaint there was more !

Dear Mr Johnson, thank you for your feedback, and I assure you we do take all feedback seriously and it is sent to the relevant staff to investigate and use to make improvements.

I am happy to hear that you felt well looked after by our medical and theatre team, and I will pass that on to them – perhaps you could let me know the name of your consultant so I can get this feedback to the right team?

But I am really sorry to hear about the avoidable delays to you going home and that this made your anxiety worse. We know people are usually keen to go home quickly once they are ready for discharge, and our medical, nursing pharmacy staff are constantly trying to improve on the waiting that can happen at this point. However it sounds as if in your case this was made worse by an error in arranging the tests needed before going home, not only the wait for discharge paperwork and medication to be done. I appreciate that must have been very irritating and frustrating and I am sorry for this, and the extra inconvenience of your son having to come back to Bradford the next day.

This is not the standard of care we want to provide.

I am worried too to hear that there were other problems and would appreciate it if you could tell me what those were.

I would really like you to get in touch with me so we can get the full picture, and investigate what went wrong.

If you could email me on patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk or call me on 01274 383863 I would be delighted to try to help. If I am not at my desk please do leave me a message with your number and I will call you back.
