"Praise for everyone who looked after me."

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / General Medicine Borders General Hospital / Radiology Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a service user),

Following a fall after suddenly being  taken unwell I required an ambulance and was taken to the ED in Borders General Hospital. I spent 3 hours being assessed and having any serious injury ruled out thankfully.   I was then transferred to the medical assessment unit for overnight cardiac monitoring due to an abnormality on admission ECG. I was reviewed early the following morning by the consultant and following a few further tests was discharged home later that day with follow up arranged.   Every member of staff from the ambulance crew Donna and Stewart, the ED staff especially Dr Amy, the radiographer, Steve the ANP who admitted me to the assessment unit and the fantastic nursing staff in ED and MAU esp the nursing assistant who’s name I can’t remember (thanks to lots of very welcome pain relief) who made me a cup of tea and stayed with me when the relief I was ok and the realisation of what happened set in. As a health care professional who has never been a patient before I have nothing but praise for everyone who looked after me.

Dear Grateful 71,

Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us of your experience in the Borders General Hospital. I am so glad that the investigations that we carried out showed nothing serious and that we were able to reassure you.

As a healthcare professional you will know how the patient journey through a hospital can be very daunting, particularly if feeling unwell! You will also be aware of the incredible importance of team work which you describe beautifully in your descriptions of each team member and their role in assessing, treating and making you feel better. Across the whole of the BGH, we work hard together with the focus of our attention always remaining firmly on the patient and I am so glad that your experience was as positive as is possible in the context of acute illness.

I will pass on your story to the leads of all of the areas that you have mentioned who will in turn let the staff in each area know of your experience. I know that the time that you have taken to tell us of your positive experience will make a big difference to staff morale and once again, I'm really grateful to you for this. I hope that you have now fully recovered from your acute illness.

Lynn

Hello Grateful 71.

Happy to see that you have recovered from you illness.

As somebody who thankfully does not need to access our services regularly, I completely get how you must have felt and am so pleased to be able to pass on your positive comments to some of those who looked after you. I am particularly pleased to note the contribution made by the nursing assistant, whose obvious care and kindness was an important and positive part of your exerience.

Best Wishes

Ed
