"My experience in QEUH Glasgow - A & E"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Bones, joint and fractures

(as the patient),

I had gone to A & E at he QUEH in Glasgow as I had fallen off a stepladder putting up Christmas lights (Yes, I was absolutely sober!), and injured my wrist. I arrived at the department at about 11.25am and my heart sank when I realised that there were about 25-30 people already in the waiting area.

I gave my details and took a seat, anticipating a long wait. But only about 10 minutes or so later, I was called into the triage room. The nurse checked my hand and wrist and ordered some x-rays, and then asked me to wait back in the A & E waiting area. Again, I thought I may have to wait a while but no, it was only about 10 minutes before the Consultant called me through. He checked my hand and wrist and showed me where to go for my x-rays. Once more, I had a very short wait before returning to the x-ray waiting room in A & E that the Consultant said I should return to.

Everything seems to run on a 10-15 minute basis here and guess what? About 10 minutes after sitting down, the consultant called me and took me to the plaster room where he put my wrist in a splint and explained to me that although my x-rays looked 'normal', there was a possibility that I may have a scaphoid fracture, and he would like me to return in 2 weeks time. he said that with this type of fracture, it often doesn't show for a few weeks after the initial injury.

Considering that there have been reports on the news regarding 'alleged' excessive waiting times at this particular A & E department, I can honestly say that I saw no signs of this, either on this or a previous occasion. I was treated with friendly courtesy and respect right through from booking in, speaking with the various health care professionals until I left to go home.
