"Uncomfortable due to an undiagnosed Hernia! "

About: North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust Salford Royal / General surgery

(as the patient),

Hi, Ive worked for the nhs for the last 10 years and after a bout of coughing over christmas ended up in a lot of pain just after new year and had to call an ambulance and arrived in my local casualty on morphine. I waited until a doctor came and saw me and did a few tests. They put a drip up and said I had gastritis. Then another doctor also said the same - in fact they discharged me after 6 hours and sent me away with 2 weeks presription for medication called omeprazole.

One of the docs said you may need to go back to your gp after this has settled down and may need a camera in your stomach but never said why. So after a couple of weeks I went back to my gp and he said I had a hernia which he needed to refer me to the surgical team for.

I was very upset as no one had detected this diagnosis even though the nhs nurse i had spoken to before ringing the ambulance suspected it and yet 2 trained doctors in an a&e department failed to diagnose it.

I am still in some pain daily and am very uncomfortable as the lump is tennis ball sized and as yet still have no appointment. I spoke to the referral team the other day and they advised me to ring back in two weeks if I hadn't heard anything.

I have completely lost my faith in the nhs as a result of this -I havent been in my new job 6 months so I have no sick pay and have an operation looming which I am really stressed about. If I'm honest, I feel like I wasted 10 years of my life working for the nhs.
