I am highly disappointed with my recent visit to the Dr in the dermatology deprtament. Having already been told by the community outpatients that I had been referred for shave excision of a mole on my face, I opted for an appointment with the consultant hoping to be better informed of the procedure and likelihood of scarring etc. Instead, I was barely allowed to talk, rushed out the door and made to feel like it was my fault for not understanding the protocol in place. I was in the room for no longer than 5 minutes, told that management would make a decision on what happened next rather than the Dr and received a highly unprofessionally written patients copy of a letter to my GP stating “we are not supposed to offer shave excision of moles!!”, which completely contradicted an earlier letter I had received. Having received nothing but excellent service from every other NHS professional (including the nurse in the room with the Dr) thus far, I was extremely shocked by the Dr’s general attitude and lack of communication and was left feeling as if it was my fault for not explaining properly or asking the right questions. In retrospect, I don’t believe this to be true and the contradictory nature of the two letters I received supports this. I intend to call the referral centre tomorrow to try and clarify matters but in the meantime, can only hope that the Dr attempts to improve their interaction with their patients so they at least leave the room feeling like they know what part of the process they are at and not more confused than when they went in.
