What I liked
I would like to highlight the way staff remained kind and caring on what must have been a very stressful day for them. I spent a total of 8 hours in the department with some of this time in a queue of trolleys placed in the corridor due to shortage of in-patient beds. Even towards the end of their extremely busy 12 hour shift, staff remained cheerful and very professional, despite abuse from unhappy patients and a never ending influx of ambulance crews. We were kept informed and received several apologies for the delay. On our arrival to EMU we were made to feel welcome and the standard of care was excellent despite similar pressures on staff. I hope that managers are made aware of the excellent care that is being delivered in less than ideal circumstances.
What could be improved
Whilst I appreciate that demands are unpredictable and am grateful to receive care in my local hospital, I do not believe that it is good or safe practice to overload an emergency department in this way. As a young female it was embarassing and undignified to spend time in a busy corridor. This is not meant in any way as a complaint as I fully understand that the situation was unavoidable.CheerfulEmergencyOpening hoursPatient careBedsCorridorsTrolleyAmbulanceComplaints
