I was alone at home when I realised I was having a heart attack. I dialled 999 and the call handler was excellent. She asked me all the necessary questions, told me to take aspirin, and kept reassuring me that help was on the way. The ambulance arrived within 15 minutes of my call, and the paramedics had me hooked up to a diagnostic machine within minutes. They confirmed that I was indeed having a heart attack, and in communication with the hospital (Ninewells in Dundee), decided to admit me as an emergency. I was rushed straight into surgery, where stents were fitted and within two hours, I was beginning my recovery in the Coronary Care Unit.
Everything about the experience was positive - the emergency call handler, the paramedics, the surgical team, the medical staff in the Unit and later on the ward were amazing, particularly considering how busy things were. I was in hospital for six days, and I can honestly say that I never had a second's anxiety all the time I was there.
Subsequently, I have been well supported by my consultant, the rehab team and my GP.
"My heart attack."
