I took my 18 year old daughter to the breast clinic and she was seen by a member of the consultant's team.Understandably my daughter was anxious and was asked why she was there by another consultant from the team, suggesting that they had not read her notes. Daughter explained why she was there as her lump had gotten bigger, the consultant then replied in a way that implied clearly they thought my daughter did not know her own body and was she sure, then they enquired as to what she wanted to do. The consultant appeared to be not to be in the right frame of mind asking if my daughter had received her ultrasound scan, which is something that they should be aware of as one of their procedures. The consultant made us feel frustrated with no compassion for someone this young. Following the ultrasound scan a biopsy was taken, although informed that they had no concerns as it appeared to still be Fibroadenoma and the biopsy was to make sure it wasn’t anything else.Following the ultrasound and biopsy returned to see the consultant my daughter now reluctant due to their initial manner, the consultant continued to be not with it. Which gave thought to if they had the right temperament to be in the breast clinic as the consultant was very vague. I had to ask questions about size of the lump now, when would we get the result. Then the consultant asked us again what we wanted to do (minimal eye contact). We advised that we would like the lump removed as my daughter was experiencing pain now and on her previous visit we were also told the lump would shrink not double in size they then commented that she “should not be experiencing pain”. My daughter was showing signs of frustration as she told me later that she felt that the consultant did not believe her and that they were not going to do anything about the lump. I believe that if I wasn't with my daughter then she would have been in the clinic less than 30 seconds.I was frustrated and annoyed with the consultant as it appeared that they did not want to do anything, I then enquired when the result would be ready the consultant closed their eyes and looked to the ceiling paused for some time, then said results would not be ready for a week but we would have to return the following week to the clinic and discuss results and potential intervention, not even suggested if anything was untoward then we would receive a telephone call. To round it off this consultant showed ignorance, insensitivity and was dismissive when my daughter explained that she was experiencing pain and showed no compassion, she is hoping that the consultant will not be running the clinic on our return as we both left very angry with our encounter and that they should not be working in this sensitive field, it appears evident that the consultant did not want my daughter to receive further treatment as we were advised to stick with what procedure we felt were fitting.I received a text re our hospital experience and likelihood to recommend which I scored 5 for extremely unlikely. It's a shame that the scoring does not reflect the support from the other staff who were wonderful.
