"Appalled at the insensitive and unprofessional approach"

About: Nevill Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted to A&C 9.00pm via ambulance from home. She is an 82 year old and had taken to her bed with no mobility and slight confusion and poor response. She was suffering excrutiating pain in her legs and back and vomitting.

Her Gp had conducted a home visit the day before and prescribed paracetamol to bring her high temperature down but confirmed her blood pressure was normal!

My complaint :

I left the hospital with my 85 year old father and was told she would be tranferred to a bed asap. At approx 1.30am I rang back to hospital to provide my home number in case of contact and was told she was being transferred that very minute to the assessment ward and I expressed relief that she would at least be more comfortable in a bed and not left on a STRETCHER all night.

At 7.30am I rang to ascertain what sort of night my mother had had was told they were unable to find her in the system It took 3 phone calls to clarify she was still on a stretcher in A&C due to bed shortages. The staff nurse I spoke to had an unfortunate attitude by speaking down to me as I was upset that this had occurred. Her response was 'well she hasn't complained '.I retorted that she would not complain. She was unable to provide updated information she even admitted she did not know some circumstances and appeared not prepared to even find out and get back or even ask me to ring back while she briefed herself on the case.

I too work in the management frame work of Social Care and I have concerns that a staff nurse can adopt what I feel is such a condescending and abrasive attitude when she should realise the stress I was under as I felt my mother's life was slipping away.

very very poor I am appalled at the insensitive and unprofessional approach.
