I was experiencing difficulty communicating because my voice had become faint and mumbled and my husband complained he could not understand me. I told the parkinsons nurse at Stranraer and she arranged for me to have speech therapy at Newton Stewart. Only a few weeks past before my first appointment. I was very nervous, as I didn't know what to expect.
After the initial interview I began my first session. The therapist, Beryl, put me at ease. She tested my swallowing using different liquids and solids.
The 2nd week, we moved on to voice control exercises. I needed some willpower to persevere with vocal exercises at home but with the therapists encouragement I was determined to do them. She also taught me the importance of posture and how to breath correctly.
My voice was recorded for Loudness and clarity and over the weeks my family noticed a definate improvement. When the therapist discharged me at the end of the course we were both pleased with the outcome, and if I feel my voice slipping back I can make an appointment to see her again in the future.
Not being able to communicate with others can be very distressing, I highly recommend the service to anyone suffering.
I was also impressed that the therapist travelled from stranraer to newton stewart each week for the therapy sessions, so that I had a local appointment.
"I highly recommend the service to anyone suffering"
