"Poor facilities and care"

About: St. Margaret's Hospital / Clinical haematology

I attended the phlebotomy clinic with my 11 year old son. He was very anxious about the procedure and had gotten himself in a bit of a state. As a result he had a fainting episode at the end of the procedure, there was no where to lie him down, and a glass of water was only given following a request. I had to kneel on the floor and prop his legs up on my shoulders. We then were allowed to leave the department without any assistance. We only made it as far as the waiting area where I got my son to lie on the seats with his head on my lapis he started to faint again.

Nobody asked if he was ok!! To get to the car we had to take it in stages where there were seating areas, once outside I had to sit him on the kerb as he felt he was going to faint again. He was already unwell so this was a really unnecessary and dreadful experience for him to go through.

So what this makes me question is where is the compassion and caring gone in the NHS? I can’t imagine that my son is the only person that faints in the phlebotomy clinic, how difficult is it to provide a bed to lie on and a little compassion. I worked for 27 years for the NHS but left last year due to the poor management in my department of expertise and total disillusionment with how it has changed. I feel lucky to be in the position of having the choice to walk away.

It seem to me that basic compassion and care have left the NHS, I feel sad and also a little scared of future developments in the NHS.
