Our daughter attended Canterbury Hospital for her 12 week ultra-sound on Christmas Eve.The outcome was that she was commencing a miscarriage. This information was given to her and her fiance in a manner that made it difficult to digest. Being told that there was 'no baby' and no further information being offered. Our daughter left the room to dress and use the facilities whilst her fiance returned to the waiting room, the ultra-sound technician informing her that she would make a phone call but did not anticipate anyone would respond due to it being Christmas.
Her fiance was unable to tell me why he had returned so soon, but his facial expression told me to expect bad news.
Our daughter returned and sat in silence. A short while later the technician approached and spoke to them in front of other patients and workers. She informed them she had not received a response to her phone call - we were unsure who she was calling - due to it being Christmas. She explained that she should attend either Ashford or Margate hospital when 'things started' not Canterbury and gave them written guidelines.
As they were in a public area both had to suppress their feelings and were unable to ask the questions they really needed answers to.
They left the hospital in shock and disbelief unsure what to do but wait 'for things to happen'. They were only aware that their GP surgery would not be open until the following Tuesday.
The facilities at Canterbury hospital for maternity care have been reduced but surely there should be a private area so that these issues can be dealt with sensitively and with dignity.
A letter has been sent outlining these concerns to the department head - to date no response has been received.
