Wife gave birth in Singleton unit. From the first call to the midwife when waters broke to when we left, we felt very well liked after. Waters broke 5am, asked to come in, waters confirmed broken and sent home with induction booked for 24hrs later. Contractions started, came in at 8pm, and birthing plan read by midwife and followed to the letter and wife put in bathing pool. We wanted minimum intervention and fuss and mid wife left us to the labour as we requested but did all the regular checks. Baby born at 1am, excellent support from wife and nurse on duty. Unfortunately had a grade 2 tear so taken up to labour ward to be seen by doctor. Doctor operated and then allowed back down to Singleton unit at 5am. Staff very attentive during the day and gave us space to bond as a family. Supported us in trying to establish breast feeding.
Only negatives - we were asked to vacate room at 10pm to make way for incoming patients when we were told at 8pm that we could stay until the morning - one of those things I suppose but not great for us as we hadn’t slept since 5am the previous day.
We have had a few issues with breast feeding since so have seen a lactation specialist who has confirmed that what we were shown and told whilst on Singleton ward was not correct and has caused the issues. None are insurmountable but it has put us back 2 weeks - maybe a bit more specialist training on breast feeding required?
All in all I highly recommend what the team do, we were given space, care and attention all in the right amounts and you allowed us to do what we wanted during labour whilst knowing that we were being given expert care - thank you for the amazing work you do
"Great care"
