My mum is a diabetic recently put on insulin. Yesterday At 3pm she suffered several episodes where her blood sugar was dropping very low, we were unable to get the blood sugars up.
,. So we came to A&E as a walk in patient. They were excellent from start to finish. Triage was very promote, her blood sugar had gone up by the time we got there. So we were not classed as an emergency.
Although very busy we were seen in minors within 1/2 hour. The Doctor we saw gave a through examination, The Doctor even got the senior Doctor who was on duty to check her, as the senior Doctor was very good on Diabetes. The Doctor was very good and wanted her to see her GP tomorrow to change dosage, Before discharge the Doctor wanted us to sit for up to an hour, then test her blood sugars again. We only waited about 20 minutes, Just as the nurse came in my mum started to feel unwell again, as her blood sugar had dropped again the promptness and efficiency of the A&E staff reacted was brilliant. they moved her into A&E .
They put her on a glucose drip, took bloods asked lots of questions , answered our questions , examined again. offered drinks and food, my mum also has a gluten allergy , so she was unable to eat the food. By 6.30 she was transferred to mau
The care the A&E staff gave her was Attentive and caring, Just great . The nurses on duty when we arrived at mau were very good and caring. Unfortunately when the shift changed the staff were not, she stayed overnight was offered very little to eat because of her gluten allergy. fortunately we live locally and were able to get her some gluten free food in. One nurse did get her a jacket potato, good on them. I do Know mau is a very busy ward (but so was A&E) . I do think catering should be able to provide a better selection for specialist diets. But overall the service the Alex give is superb .
