What I liked
I was admitted to SAU, where on admission, the staff were brilliant. Everything was efficient and smooth. However, once I was admitted, it was all downhill. I was nil by mouth for 24 hours, but was not given any IV fluids. The Dr had tried to put in a cannula when I arrived - I did tell him to try again but he didn't. I asked the nurse at night as my mouth was dry and I had a headache and she took away the sip of water that I had! She said there were no Drs around to do it.
It seemed the nursing staff were on a tick-box exercise - the most I saw of them was a head around my curtain asking me 'do you have a needle in' and 'do you have pain?' so they could tick their boxes but actually, I hadn't received any care at all. I have been an inpatient in other hospitals and was quite disappointed by this. It seems that all that is important is paperwork. It looks like I have been cared for but actually, all they did was tick a box. I know they are overworked and under pressure, but I also work in the NHS and I know that sitting down with your patient, even for 60 seconds, can make a huge difference. Time to care?? I wish they had
What could be improved
Get rid of the paper work. Or at least reduce it to something sensible. Just because there is a form for it or a box to tick, does not mean it is right.AdmissionsBureaucracyOpening hoursPatient careProfessionalismReceptionDoctorsNursing staffArrogant
