"First class care"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / Cardiology Borders General Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

After feeling tired for approximately 4 weeks my family insisted I go the A&E. Shortly after speaking to reception I was seen by various staff and felt was given first class care. Temperature, pulse, blood pressure heart rate and bloods samples were taken. I was informed I had fast Atrial Fibrillation and low blood pressure. It was only then I realised they considered my illness quite serious.

That evening I was moved to ward 5 where I was continually monitored. Staff were extremely friendly, caring and helpful.  I was continually informed of test results. What Doctors were doing and why.

After a few days of various antibiotics to fight sepsis I developed  a rash over my body. Following that, swelling occurred mainly on my right knee and then my whole body. My feet joints developed pain and I was referred to rheumatology.

Dear Robert S,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience in the Borders General Hospital. Although it sounds as though you had a rocky time complicated by sepsis and other rheumatological complications, I am very glad that you felt reassured throughout your time in hospital and that we kept you up to date with your care at all times. When I read complaints, so many of them are mired in communication breakdown and so I am delighted that we managed to get this right in your case. All of our clinical teams in the BGH are striving to include the patient in every decision around their healthcare and it sounds as though the teams looking after you did exactly that!

Once again I'd like to thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience in the BGH. I will forward your kind words on to the clinical teams in Wd 5 & ED where I can tell you they will be gratefully received by all members of staff!

Best wishes,

Lynn

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. I think your experience highlights the value patients put upon being kept informed with regard to the care they are receiving and how reassuring this can be when even during periods of particularly poor health. When our ED and Ward 5 Teams receive your positive comments I know this will reinforce the approach they take in cases similar to yours to the benefit of other patients passing through these areas.

I hope you are now enjoying better health.

Kind regards.

Ed
