"poor and grossly misleading information"

About: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

My partner was admitted in August and underwent the first stage of a procedure. He should have had the surgery in Winchester but both surgeons in Winchester were on holiday a the same time. What commercial company would allow this?

During his stay we were given the minimum of information and various things were far from adequate. These included being given double the dose of his medication. In addition we requested as we are entitled to to a discharge meeting. I was made to feel this was an unreasonable request. He was told that after his surgery he would be sent somewhere closer to home. It did not happen. I had to get three buses and a train in each direction to visit him. I never saw the surgeon as they always visited in the morning and I was not allowed to visit in the afternoon. On one occasion I was made to feel awful by a nurse. I arrived to visit at 12.45 because my journey took so long and was told I could not see my partner until 2.00 PM as visiting did not start until then. When I arrived home I double checked to find the website clearly says 12.00 noon. I was told by the ward manager he was going to be sent to a community hospital for rehabilitation. However within days this had changed and he was not going to a community hospital. He was given little support even though he could not walk. I tried to ask for him to be mobile before he was discharged but I was given an ultimatum that he was to be sent home even though he could walk only a few steps with a walking frame. Although I have commitments as Chair of two organisations and a director of another I have been unable to leave him for more that two hours or so as he could fall and has dome so a number of times, he is unable to get himself a drink or food and we have been left with no support at all. He has to have regular blood tests on a Monday but I do not know when the nurse will arrive and so am unable to leave the house as he is unable to go to the door to let anyone in. This is bad enough but he was told that he could have the second stage surgery four week after the end of antibiotics he was taking as long as the infection had cleared. We have been told a number of times that this is the case. He should therefore have had the surgery at the beginning of December. This week, too late to make any alternative arrangements for December we have been told that it will not happen until February. He has never been told this I had to make several phone calls to establish it. I am frankly appalled at his treatment. He was in tears about this but no one seems to care.

Thank you for your feedback regarding our orthopaedic service. I would like to apologise that the care and treatment that you and your partner have received has not been of the high quality we aim to provide. We could have been better at supporting you both during this time. I have shared your comments with the clinical leaders for the service who are already investigating so that we can improve things for the future.
