Having recently had the misfortune to be a patient on Ward 2 at West Park these are my observations.
Patients addressed innapropriately with no respect we are not all your darling and dont wish to be demeaned in this way.
Night staff have no regard for patients comfort, main bay lights turned on at 3am whilst staff have long conversation about shifts, main lights and TV turned on 6,30am on several occasions. Older patients waiting up to an hour for staff to answer call bells then being chastised becaused they have wet beds. I myself was told at 2,30am i must wait an hour for my pain medication as nurse was on their break. Perfectly sensible patients being shaken awake at 2am to be asked if they needed the toilet despite specifically asking for this not to happen, Being served a meal with cutlery taken from nurses pocket. Patient being told to be quiet as her pain wasnt that severe, No communication between any staff or doctors. No privacy Doctors conducting consultations in dayroom at table wirh 3 other patients present, patient unable to speak english being shou ted at louder and louder . I have been around hospitals and nursing all my adult life and have never come across the uncaring attitude of majority of the staff .
I know that it impeded my recovery as i was anxious and stressed most of the time, there were more than one occasion when call bells were rung as other patienrs were in danger on one occasion it took an hour to come to a very immobile lady who was trying to walk wi th no aid several "nurses" came to ward door and said it wouid have to wait one actually came to the door and said sorry im going home . To many incidents to recall but something needs to be changed very quickly .
