In 2014, working all hours for two years to cover my role and that of an absent colleague, I went down with exhaustion, flu, pneumonia, laryngospasm and I began to have mental health issues (two distinct mental breakdowns) with phobias (agoraphobia and claustrophobia). Over time, other issues shown through blood tests were neutropenia, anaemia and vitamin D deficiency. Royal Brompton were responsible for finding the first two blood problems, along with ruling out other issues to narrow down what would help me. With good investigation and support from the Royal Brompton Hospital, I began to understand my condition and manage my regular day time attacks better. (More recently, I have suffered sleep-related laryngospasm - at first I woke up choking and with a weird sound that resembled someone drowning but this has now developed so I unfortunately have a recurring dream that acknowledges my airway is closed, but wrongly tells me to suck in hard to overcome the blockage and so I continue to sleep while not breathing. When it is clear, I am not breathing, my husband fortunately wakes me up, but unless I can countenance wearing a mask, there is probably no more the RBH can do for me and I appreciate there are much more serious problems they deal with). However, I am grateful for the complete dedication of a top team, including the doctors, the specialists who conduct the tests, an amazing physio and voice specialist. I arrived at the hospital a complete physical and mental mess; my condition was thoroughly investigated and I was treated with such understanding and care by a top team.
"Top quality investigation of issues and care"
