"Maternity ward"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / Maternity care

My baby was born three weeks ago at Royal Berkshire. I am appalled and upset with the way the midwifes dealt with my baby. Soon as baby was born he was given to me and after 30 mins taken and passed to my husband. Baby had pooped inside the womb so needed extra checks. However, nobody checked him even after being passed to my husband I had gone into theatre and baby still hadn't been checked for 40 further minutes until my husband had to press emergency button as he wasn't breathing very well. No one changed him or clothed him and he hadn't eaten in three hours. Very distressing terrible midwife. I hope noone has to suffer this way

We are very sorry for the distressing situation that you had after the birth of your baby. For any women being transferred to theatre for a clinical reason post-delivery, we should endeavour to assist with skin to skin for mums with their new babies, which would encourage the baby to breastfeed. If the baby is not interested in breastfeeding at this point, the best practice would be to help the new mum with hand expressing, so that some breast milk is available for the baby while mum is in theatre. However, some situations are clinical emergencies for the mum and therefore the time would not be available to do this which is what may have happened in your case.

Babies are left with dad when a mum is in theatre and the midwife caring for the mum would go to theatre with her.

It is important that staff on the Delivery Suite frequently return to the room to offer support to dad and complete any necessary care for the baby. We are very sorry that this did not happen for you and that your husband felt abandoned and care was not appropriate to your baby’s needs. If you would like to discuss this in more detail with the Delivery Suite team or matron please contact our Patient Relations Team on 0118 322 8338 - they will facilitate a meeting with the appropriate people.
