"Very Professional"

About: York Hospital / Accident and emergency

I ended up in A&E on a busy Monday night, and although the staff were almost running around like headless chickens, they were doing all that they could, and they apologised for the long wait.

When I arrived at 9:30pm, I was told I would be waiting 3-4 hours to be seen, which is what I expected. At 11:30pm however, the department was even busier than they had anticipated, and it was 6 hours before anyone was seen.

There were a few complaints from people who were simply frustrated at waiting, and although one of the nurses was doing their best to explain that they have to put the badly injured/dying people first, apparently that wasn't good enough. Sigh.

Yes it was horrid waiting 6 hours to be seen, but in the meantime I'd had an x-ray, been given medication, and was conscious and breathing so I wasn't a priority - which is kinda nice in a way.

When I was seen, the doctor was very friendly and professional, even though they were rushed off their feet. The staff at A&E were great, and there is not much more they could have done. They have my complete respect.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

I am so pleased to hear about your experience within our Emergency Department at York Hospital. I am sorry to hear that the department was so frantic and busy when you arrived and for the delays you experienced.

I am glad to hear that despite the delays we were able to make you more comfortable with medication and that the staff you saw were friendly and professional.

We are very proud of our staff and we know that they always strive to provide the best service to our patients. sometimes under extreme pressures; it's great to get feedback from our patients reflecting this.

I hope that all is well and that you will receive the same high standard of care should you need our services again in the future.

Wishing you the best
