I was referred to the centre for a gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Minimal checks done when on ward other than name, date of birth and allergies. Wasn't taken down until midday which was not ideal but I could live with that.
Unfortunately main issues arose during my procedure. I was given the sedative which I was told would make me sleepy however this led to me completely blacking out. I woke up during my gastroscopy vomiting profusely and the staff holding me down while yelling at me to breathe. At this point the bile had tried to escape through my nose and I couldn't breathe past it and when I went to indicate so (as you cant speak due to the camera) they grabbed my hands and held them down as well. Eventually I blacked out once more which I am grateful for.
I awoke again during my colonoscopy in extreme physical pain. It honestly felt like knives ripping through me. I made them aware that I was in pain several times with no real response and found myself sobbing from the pain. At one point through the haze of drugs and pain I tried to move away from them and once again found myself pinned down by the staff. To some extent I understood that if I had continued to move I could have been seriously injured but I was already in severe pain and was being ignored and it was just instinctive. This left me with bruises over my body and other injuries. At this point I was given further medication and again blacked out. I woke up still crying and was wheeled back to the ward crying. No curtains were drawn and I was left there on display for everyone on the ward to see which was quite distressing for all. My canula was removed before I was fully conscious and within half an hour I was given my envelope of results (barely two sentences) and told to leave.
I left there in absolute agony and honestly traumatised. I was bruised, my knee had been twisted during the procedure and left me with a painful limp and I suffered horrific abdominal pain for over 10 days to the point where it hurt to cough, laugh, bend over etc. I received one follow up call from the hospital asking how it all went and when I told them what had happened and the pain I was told that I was welcome to attend A&E and told sorry that this happened and goodbye. Not much of a follow up and they weren't at all interested in what I had to say.
"Very traumatic experience which left me bruised..."
