My husband was diagnosed with Lung Cancer August 2017
Following month of investigation into how severe his Cancer was to the date of his operation 2 months passed.
We were made to feel at ease and trusting of all medical staff from porters to nurses to surgical staff - We first saw a Dr who was a Chest & Lung Specialist, and this Dr did the main investigation to my husband's first Biopsy - that confirmed diagnosis.
After which we were passed on to the Heart Team and Lung Specialist. On our first visit we found that this doctor is an easy going Specialist. The doctor explained to us what the procedure would be that they would carry out, and they warned that it may be a larger procedure so don’t be alarmed if when woken it was different procedure carried out.
We met a really nice member of staff who carries out studies of drugs for cancer patients, this member of staff asked my husband if he would do the study, we had only discussed with each other the week previous if asked would he do it, he said Yes, so told the member of staff of course he would, so started the trial drug, it is a drug used for Malaria and only works on certain types of Lung Cancers, ones which have lots of air pockets as Lung Cancer Masses feed off Oxygen, he was suitable, went ahead for 2 weeks until day before operation.
His operation was on 27th October 2017 he was having a Right Thoracotomy and Pneumonectomy. It was a very long day, arriving at hospital for 7am to him going down at 10am to seeing him in Critical Care at 5pm that day,.
The next 9 days he made good progress, walking round the ward as asked, breathless but to be expected. On day 9 he was discharged and came home to his family and home cooked food with a bit of “Salt” missed in hospital said made food bland not having any.
He is now waiting to se the Oncologist ahead of starting Chemotherapy Treatment in the New Year.
