"A and E nightmare"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency

My Brother was taken in to qmc today as first he was taken to resus then into the blue area of a&e.

He suffers from fits and Blackouts which was the reason for being there, this has been going on for a month now and no conclusion.

I left him in the main bed area while indent to get a coffee I let several members of staff know I was leaving him and that he couldn't stand up, They said they would watch him.

On return he wasn't in the area I left him I was then informed he had thrown him self on purpose?! onto the floor and someone had taken down the cot side. As a result he had fallen face first onto the floor.

I was taken to him to see the side of his face swollen like 2 golf balls and he was insistent he had said he wasn't feeling well to the nurse (agency) which means hes about to blackout the nurse was stood next to him they then let the cot side down and he had a blackout and fell off the bed. He's now been admitted for a head injury .. due to being in a&e and the blackout and fitting that he's been taken in for are a secondary issue.

Genuinely cannot believe something like this could happen and an official complaint will be going to queens in the morning! When this was raised to staff they said they didn't realise he was a fall risk even though his notes clearly say he can't stand. it then took another 2 hours for a yellow band to be given to him. A&E excuse is not everyone reads the notes on the patients so don't know why they are there .. surly this is basic?? Failed duty of care here.

I’m very concerned to read this description of your brother’s care. This is certainly not the experience we would wish for any of our patients and I’m sorry for the distress this has caused you and your brother. I would like to investigate this as soon as possible but will need a few more details to be able to do so. Would you be able to make contact with our patient experience team so they can get some more information? This will enable me to investigate more fully. They can be reached on 0115 924 9924 ext. 66623 or QMCPET@nuh.nhs.uk.

Kind regards,

Jane Newton.

Matron, Emergency Department.
