"Gift of life from my liver donor and the NHS"

I was diagnosed with sudden, acute liver failure at the end of January 2010 and had a liver transplant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in February which came as a complete shock to me and my family.

I have always been a fit and active person playing hockey, running and walking regularly. I have always kept an eye on my weight and enjoyed good health. However, after the New Year break, I felt lethargic, nauseous and out of sorts. Following various blood tests, I became jaundiced in the middle of January but was still told that there was nothing to worry about.

I was finally admitted to Sandwell Hospital at the request of Dr Shingal and transferred to the QEH two days later. I have nothing but praise for the treatment and support I received at both hospitals, particularly from my Liver Recipient Transplant Co-ordinator, Moira Perrin, and my wonderful surgeon, Darius Mirza who performed my op.

Nine months on, I am enjoying my life and not a day goes by without me thinking how lucky I am to be alive! I will always remain eternally grateful to my donor's family for donating my liver - it really has been a gift of life. Thank you NHS!
