"The staff were helpful and knowledgeable..."

About: The Royal London Hospital

What I liked

The staff were helpful and knowledgeable.

It's also next to the tube and a lot of shops if you need to buy anything before or after a visit.

What could be improved

The hospital was unclean and run down. How can a hospital function when it is attempting to treat those whose immune systems are compromised when dirt and dust are everywhere? MRSA anyone?

Notices peeling off every wall (why do hospitals have so many notices casually selltotaped to the wall which nobody reads?).

Doesn't dirt breed germs and disease? Doesn't that hinder (expensive) recuperation? Doesn't a cleaner cost about £6 per hour?

Anything else?

Shockingly bad. Here we are in London in the 21st century, yet how it can remain open while so dirty / dilapidated is a mystery. Staff and patients deserve better.

Thank you very much for taking the time to give us your feedback on the care provided by our staff. We are pleased to hear that you found our staff to be helpful and knowledgeable.

With regards to your comments about the hospital environment, we’d like to reassure you that when the new The Royal London hospital opens in late 2011 and early 2012 the new buildings will dramatically improve the hospital experience for patients and visitors. The hospital environment has been designed to be safe, welcoming and healing, and wards will be spacious, light and airy, with separate facilities for men and women.

The Trust has invested more resources to increase the number of cleans per day and we continue to address a number of environmental improvements in the hospital. We are improving the patient environment by introducing a higher frequency of cleaning and new initiatives in cleaning technology over the next year.

Regrettably, without knowing the exact details of your experience we cannot provide further comments here. However, if you would like to have this matter fully investigated, please contact the Trust by calling our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 020 7943 1335 or emailing our complaints team at complaints@bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk
