"I attended for day case surgery and I..."

About: University Hospital Lewisham

What I liked

I attended for day case surgery and I was really happy with my care. The surgeon spent time talking to me before the operation and explained the procedure clearly, I met the anaethetist who put me at ease and the nursing staff were friendly and kept me informed while I was waiting. The surgical team were really reassuring when I was in the anaesthetic room and made me feel comforable. I'd like to thank one of the surgical assistants, for waiting with me before my operation. He went the extra mile in making sure I was ok, and when he came to see me in the day case ward afterwards, he checked I'd got something to eat and also checked to see if my husband had arrived. People like this really do make a difference, so thank you.

I was also very impressed with the short waiting times - my surgical appointment arrived in the post day after my intial outpatient appointment.

What could be improved

I had to wait a long time before my surgery and I didn't have my belongings as they'd already been taken to the recovery area. So I couldn't read the books and magazines I'd brought to pass the time. Also as I was in a single sex ward after my operation, the nurses wouldn't allow my husband in to help me when I was recovering - so I had to get dressed on my own with no support. I appreciate that some patients want their care in single sex facilities, but I don't think it works when even partners aren't allowed in.
