"I was one of seven men who arrived for..."

What I liked

I was one of seven men who arrived for the same screening procedure at the hospital. I was met by a nurse who verified who I was and then told me briefly what was going to happen. She then showed me to a cubicle and left me to change into a gown. I was then shown into a waiting room with the other men.

When it came for my turn to be examined I was met by another nurse (one of a team of four who worked with the surgeon). Again she told me what was going to happen and offered the information that "the examination could be a bit painful, but not too bad". She was right. The procedure was uncomfortable but not too bad.

After the scan and examination had finished the surgeon showed me a copy of the scan image and we had a conversation about what it meant.

Although I left the hospital with some questions in my mind I felt that they were ones which would be answered when the final results of the biopsy had been carried out.

My overall feeling after the examination was that I had been treated as an adult, I had everything explained, including the possible delays, and that everything had been done to explain in detail the procedure. At no time was I left wondering, which I feel is very important.

The four nursing staff and the surgeon had obviously worked together for some time, and this feeling of professional care and mutual confidence was transmitted loud and clear to me.

I left the hospital feeling good. I felt that I had been treated well and that nothing had been hidden from me. A very professional set up, a very caring and empathic team.

What could be improved

There could have been chocolate digestives with the cup of tea afterwards......
