The attitude of the consultant was appalling, mostly because I expressed an opinion about how I should be treated, i.e. local anaesthesia rather than general. I was as a consequence shifted to the back of the queue and spent the entire day waiting for my surgery. When I was eventually wheeled into the theatre, the theatre nurses checked again if I was sure I wanted a local, fine, no argument, but then the consultant also then tried vociferously to persuade me to have a general - I refused. I was then given a local, and was rushed into the theatre far too quickly in my opinion. I was immediately in pain as not enough time had elapsed for the local to take effect, so they added some more, waited a couple of minutes and carried on. Still more pain, eye wateringly bad, so they added a bit more local, and carried on. Eventually, thankfully, the local took effect, just as the op was coming to an end.

I can only come to the conclusion that my insistance on a local anaesthetic interrupted the 'production line' like efficiency of the unit, and delayed the consultant from getting his dinner.

I would recommend that if a local is such a pain for you to perform, then don't offer it in your literature, that way I could have made the decision not to go to this hospital
