I am a single mother living in rural East Riding with a 5 year old and a 4 month old baby. I have no access to help with childcare. I urgently needed to access help through sexual health services, but find that it is not accessible to me because the local sattelite clinics are evening clinics when the children are in bed, and the drop-in clinics in central Hull mean that I have to face driving into Hull (with the attendant fuel costs) and waiting for an untold length of time with a tired baby who would rather be at home in bed. It feels impossibly grim at an impossibly grim moment in my life.

If you want to provide a service that takes care of the sexual health needs of all the people in Hull and East Yorkshire, then it needs to be a service that they can access. That means taking account of the particular issues facing rural communities in terms of physical access to clinics, transport costs, time etc, as well as the particular challenges faced by, e.g. single parents. Even if you only had one day a week when people could book an appointment then it would feel more possible for people like me. I feel it's really poor that you're not taking more account of this, and in my opinion this means that services are only available to certain people.

We hope you found the information we provided on 27th October useful. In order to support you further, we would like to provide you with a little more information about accessing our services. The service, in the past, has operated more appointment based clinics; however, we found that a large number of people did not attend for appointments. We are committed to ensuring people are seen as quickly as possible (within 48 hours for the GU service) and because of this, more walk-in clinics were developed. We are sorry you have found the service you require unavailable at a time convenient for yourself. For an up-to-date list of clinics and services available in Hull and the East Riding, you can visit our website www.luveyorks.co.uk/clinic-times-services. Alternatively, by calling a central number 01482 336336, a member of staff can help you find a service that would best meet your needs and they will also provide you with opening times and locations of clinics. We deliver a number of sexual health clinics across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire which are open at different times and days throughout the week. We do have clinics that are open during the day; however, many are open in the evening in order to support service users who work/attend school/college. Many family Doctors offer a contraception and sexual health services in the local surgery. To check if your Doctor offers this service it is best to contact the surgery directly. We apologise if you have tried all of the above and did not find any of the clinic opening times convenient or if attending a GP service was not your preferred choice. We are aware that there are many people in your situation who do not find services easy to access. In order to improve this, one of the projects the service is planning to develop is an online facility whereby people can access advice and support, postal testing kits etc over the internet where clinically suitable. This will be manned by an experienced nurse who will have access to medical support. We are committed to delivering services that are user-friendly and this includes making our services accessible to members of the public who live in Hull and the East Riding. Your feedback is valuable and we will raise your concerns regarding lack of access for people living in rural areas and/or with childcare commitments with our commissioners (those who fund our services).
