I currently work for the trust and while walking into work last week injured my foot by falling off a kerb. After a couple of hours thinking the pain would subside I decided A and E would probably be my best bet, until my manager mentioned that we have a minor injuries unit here. Sceptival about wether they would be able to do anything without access to the systems and technology available in most emergency room these days, I hobbled over to the Kenton and Lucas building, not to sure what I would find on my arrival.
Well all I can say was how silly I felt about being sceptical. From the moment I entered the door the receptionist was extremely friendly, polite and professional. I immediately felt at ease and barely had time to hop over to a chair before I was called in by one of the fantastic nursing team. The nurse wasted no time in assessing my stupidity and quickly ordered an x-ray, to be done at barts asap, and sent me on my way to the main building. I was even asked if I wanted a wheelchair, which in hindsight would have been a smart move, but in my rush to find out just how badly I was injured, I declined the offer.
Arriving over for x-ray required a 5 minute wait in the seating area outside, I could not believe just how fast and efficient the teams are in that department. I was greeted by a radiographer and a trainee. Both were extremely polite and professional, then they went about taking the images needed to assess me. They went over my foot with a fine tooth comb, taking x-rays from every angle possible, constantly giving feedback on how they wanted me to position it and the whole thing was over in a little under 10 minutes.
After leaving the department it was just a short waddle back over to the minor injuries site, again I was offered a wheelchair for easier transport, but again, I refused thinking it would be fine as at this time I thought it was a minor sprain. Fast forward 5 minutes and as I entered the door to the unit I was immediately brought through to another nurse, who already had my images on her screen. This is where I was told of the fracture I had managed to inflict on myself.
I was told thoroughly the details of my injury, how to take care of it and what timeframe of recovery to expect. I was given a special shoe and was told that the fracture clinic would be in touch the next day. Which they were. All in all this whole process took 25 minutes and I can honestly say that this was the best care I have ever received by any medical team, anywhere. It is an absolute privelidge to know I work in a trust where these hard working proffessionals also do. I really cannot thank them enough.
"Amazing service from incredible staff"
