My son(aged 25) was under the care of the urology dept for surgery to remove a tumour and fit prosthetic .When we were eventually able to both find out about how his surgery had gone( we had not seen him since 7 am and it was now 3pm) and again after much transferring of calls the hospital eventually found him in the Kemp Welch ward and we were informed we could at long last come and see him. We found him in pain and discomfort and he had still not been offered anything to drink or eat. I had to first find and then ask a Health Care assistant for pain relief and (after we waited 2 hours for a promised drink and sandwich for my son which never appeared) It was up to myself and my husband to go in search of a drink (any drink)and sandwich for him in the hospital restaurant. I understand that the "no frills" policy of the NHS is to only offer the most basic of care but when this slows or even impedes the healing of the excellent work of the doctors and surgeons then the post operative care needs to be looked at. My family according to our tax breakdown contribute many thousands of pounds to healthcare as do many others but when my hardworking son is deprived(when he needs it) basic care such as pain relief and food after a major surgery there is something very very wrong with the healthcare in this hospital. I noted when trying to find a means to voice my concerns that the ward staff when discharging my son did not ask us to complete the friends and families test either. Another oversight??
