"Tired of waiting"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

I am waiting for a replacement knee operation but seem to be getting nowhere. After 4 years of being passed from physiotherapist to hydro therapist and being told that my x- rays showed nothing I was finally given an MRI scan which revealed that I needed an operation. Initially I was to have my knee cleaned, which was done in January this year after 2 cancellations. When this didn't rectify the problem it was agreed in May that I needed knee replacement. I was told that there was a 3 month wait for the operation, which would take me to August. As I had heard nothing by the middle of August I made contact with the consultant's secretary and told them that I had a holiday planned for September. They said that a note would be made of my holiday dates. I did not believe that it would not affect my place on the waiting list. I actually thought I had helped by advising of my holiday arrangements. At the beginning of October I rang to ask if there was any news about my date and was told that I was not on the October list but may be on November's. I called again today and was told that it was not possible to give me any idea of when my operation would take place but I agreed to go on the list for a cancellation. It appears that I have been penalised for giving dates when I would not be able to have the surgery. I feel that I am getting nowhere and my life is now on hold. I can't plan anything and my husband has had to save holidays from work for when I get home after my operation. He is being asked to confirm dates at his work and will lose the holiday days if he doesn't book them before December. I just need to know what is happening.

Hello, thank you for letting us know about this, and I am sorry for the wait you have had, I realise that that is difficult and distressing for you.

I have checked with the Orthopaedic waiting list team, and they have told me that you would not have been penalised for telling us you could not come in at a particular time, they would simply try to avoid offering you an admission date then. However we would like to talk to you and help you resolve this, we do take all feedback seriously.

Please could you get in touch with me as soon as you can, and I will be happy to try to help. You can email me on patient.experience@bthft.nhs.uk or call me on 01274 383863.

If you email, please can you include your name, address, date of birth, and if you have it, your hospital number which will being RAE or MRN. If you don't have that, your NHS number would be helpful. It would also be helpful to know who your consultant is.

If you call and I am not at my desk please leave me a message with your name and number, and mention that you are calling about your knee surgery, and I will call you back as soon as I get your message.

If the message says I am on leave, which I may be for some of next week, there will be an alternative number or email to contact, please do contact my colleagues rather than wait for me to return given the urgency regarding your husband's leave booking.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
