"Lack of information"

About: Conquest Hospital

Our son, who has learning difficulties, was admitted 5 October and is currently still in James Ward.

It has been a long slog getting various tests sorted out, and we have tried our best to accept this without too much complaint, but I feel that today was the last straw. A consultant/specialist was due to 'visit' to decide the next stage. We knew that they were going to be around during ward rounds so made every effort to be on the ward early so we could find out what was going on. After several requests of the staff to find out whether this doctor had been, we finally found out from a junior doctor what the plan was. What totally annoyed me was that we later found that the consultant visited about 2 minutes before we arrived. They were subsequently told by the staff that we had arrived on the ward and wanted to talk to them.

They didn't come to see us.

I realise that a doctor only deals with the patient, but as said patient has learning difficulties, the case should have been discussed with us, his parents. Before someone rattles on about 'confidentiality', all the other staff on the ward had previously discussed the situation and let us know what was going on.

The ward staff have been brilliant, I just feel that this attitude did not seem to filter up to some of the doctors, consequently causing a great deal of emotional upset and stress.
