"A&E"

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

I arrived at A&E with my 100 year old mother, who, I believed may have had a stroke. We were not prioritised and had to wait for almost three hours to even be seen by a medic. We were then put back into the waiting room where we waited for a further five hours. My mother sitting the whole time in wheelchair. I could not believe that there appeared no compassion for my mothers age or condition. Eventually we were moved by the community nurse to St Margarets where they had found her a bed. This was eleven hours after we arrived. What a day and one I will not forget. I wrote to the Chief Executive who was sympathetic but too late. He has since passed my complaint to their dedicated office and I have not heard from anyone again. I understand the difficulties of the NHS but the inefficiencies that I saw that day beggared belief.

I think they need to reasses their procedures.

Thank you for taking the trouble to post about your experience and for writing to the CEO regarding your concern about your mother's experience in the Emergency Department.

It is appreciated as it is only by receiving these concerns from families or the patient concerned that we are able to fully investigate. We are looking at what improvements could be made to our complaints process and so would welcome any further comment you may wish to make.

In order to do this, please call 01279 82 72 11 to speak to our Patient Advice and Liaison Service or email paht.pals@nhs.net.

Kind regards,

The PALS service.
