"Lacking in knowledge of Epilepsy"

About: Cumberland Infirmary / Accident and emergency

I have epilepsy. I had a very serious seizure at home prompting my father to ring an ambulance when I couldn't be woken. When the (very lovely and professional) paramedics arrived, I had regained consciousness and did not want to attend hospital as unfortunately every time I have been, the staff simply do not understand the need for an epileptic to sleep after a seizure. I was coerced into attending under the premise I would have a bed. Unfortunately, upon arrival I was taken from the stretcher and plonked into a wheelchair in the reception room, saying there would be a 2 hrs wait to see a Dr and no bed was needed. This is unacceptable. It is of paramount importance that I, and many others, sleep after a seizure. If I do not, I will lapse into further serious seizures which can result in fatality. I also had a badly bruised and scraped leg, a deep laceration to my tongue and was in a state of confusion. Giving the very serious threat of further seizures and my inability to sleep in a wheelchair in reception, I decided to discharge myself. Speaking to the person on reception, they called over a nurse to bring a disclaimer, which is fine. However, the nurse was simply the most aggressive, hurtful and thoughtless clinician I have ever met. I was berated, and told "you sign this on the understanding you go home and die" leaving myself and my husband speechless. I've been upset with Carlisle hospital a few times in regards to their knowledge and treatment of epilepsy, on both A&E and Maternity, and this needs to change. I'd be happy to discuss this if needed.

Dear Claire

Please accept my apologies that your emergency admission has left you disappointed and upset.

It is not acceptable that you were spoken to in this way. I can understand how very distressing this was for you and your husband. Rudeness is never acceptable even when the staff who are present are under pressure in such a busy department.
