"Visit to Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Day Case Unit Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Medical Paediatrics (Children's Medicine)

(as a parent/guardian),

Our one year old daughter developed a very angry, red rash all over her body in a very short space of time, coupled with a high temperature, vomiting and lack of appetite. We phoned NHS 24 and spoke to two lovely and very helpful operators. An appointment was made for us with the GMed doctor at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. We were taken in early for our appointment and the doctor was great, as was the second doctor who she asked for an opinion. We were referred up to the Children's Ward as the GMeds doctor wasn't sure exactly how to categorise the rash and wished further examination.

We were greeted by a fantastic nursing team up at the Children's Hospital, including a student nurse, who were all brilliant with our little girl, helping distract her while they took note of the required observations. She was then examined by two doctors, both of whom were again very good with her and had a lovely manner. We were advised that our daughter needed to be put on an antibiotic drip and have some blood tests done and swabs of the rash taken. This was as you can imagine extremely distressing for both her and us but the team were excellent, very efficient and made the process as easy as it could be.

We were then moved up to the medical ward to a different nursing team - just as kind and helpful as the first. The day staff the following morning were, again, very efficient, friendly, chatty and kind - the nursing team, the doctors, the paediatric consultant, the auxiliaries and the catering staff we saw. The nature of the rash was proving difficult to pinpoint so we had a dermatologist referred, who then consulted her senior plus more doctors. Throughout all of this we were kept informed of what was going on and what their thoughts were at each stage which was very reassuring as we had a very poorly and miserable little girl. Eventually, when further blood test results came in, it was concluded that the cause was viral and we could be discharged with the relevant treatment. We couldn't have asked for a better team to be dealt with by, and would really like to extend our sincerest thanks to everyone working in those teams.

Hi CD123

Thank you for sharing your story. I am so sorry to learn that your one year old daughter had to be hospitalised and I hope she is well on the mend. This must have been a really worrying experience for you all and I am pleased your little one is now home from hospital.

It was kind of you to take the time to thank the staff members who were involved in caring for your little girl. Your story is a fantastic example of services working together to provide the best possible care and experience for patients and their families. I am sure my colleagues within NHS Grampian will be delighted with your feedback.

Thank you for your specific reference to your call to NHS 24 and for your positive comments for our staff. Here at NHS 24 we understand that people who require to call us are usually worried about their own health, or that of a loved one, so our staff always try to ensure a positive experience for callers. Should you care to contact me with some additional detail, then I would be pleased to hear from you. This would mean that I could identify the staff members you spoke with and share your story directly with them. I can be contacted on 0141 337 4597 or by email at patientaffairs@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

I will however share your story more widely within NHS 24 so that staff can be reminded of the hugely important role they play in providing an overall positive experience for patients and callers. Thanks again for getting in touch and I do wish you all well.

With kind regards

Shona

Hi CD123
Thank you very much for taking the time to post your story. Its always pretty scary when a child is ill and I am delighted that staff did their very best to make everything as easy as possible. I hope that your daughter is now on the mend and that you have recovered from what must have been a pretty scary experience.

Its always nice for staff to hear when they make such a positive difference and I will of course share your feedback with the wider RACH team. The team work very hard together to provide a service that meets children's needs but also ensure that families are involved and informed.

I am delighted that your experience within RACH was positive and I will share your feedback with the wider team and thanks for taking the time to post.
