Referred to clinic following years' of my child suffering with abdominal pains, eczema, asthma and frequent bowel looseness.
GP instigated referral for my child to be reviewed due to blood tests being abnormal and to exclude allergies that significantly impacts on her daily life.
The majority of the consultation was spent with the Consultant informing me of the evolution of mammals, how food is produced in excess and gave the impression more than one occasion that they felt allergy testing was pointless. Even though an allergy clinic is run from the department .
Therefore, despite repeating my reasons for my GP and myself wanting my child to be allergy tested, so I was not restricting dietary intake needed which may be negatively impacting on my child's development and assistance with being able to manage conditions more effectively nothing was achieved.
When I began to leave the clinic appointment, I was asked "what do you want me to do then?" at the time I said "nothing" as it seemed the whole appointment had been a pointless activity.
What I should have said was "Please just listen to your patient's.
We are here for advice, support and for your clinical judgement to be given in a considered and measured way. Part of your job is to guide us make the right decisions and for us not to feel we are wasting your time. Please allow us time to respond and tell you of our concerns (even if they seem trivial to you, they are not to us), the majority of patients' and I suspect no children are not there for fun, but because they need care, and someone to help them".
Surely, this is what good care in the NHS is all about?
