"Minor surgery options"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Dermatology Nottinghamshire County Teaching PCT / Keyworth surgical dermatology service

(as a relative),

Both my husband and I have needed surgery for BCCs over the past ten years. In my case I have had to go to a GP each time, get an opinion and be referred to the hospital. In my first case, the GP delayed me time after time until the growths were so large I needed skin grafts. The GP seemed to me to know nothing about skin cancer and didn't seem very willing to consult anybody. (They even diagnosed me as having ringworm instead and treated me accordingly). I have had nine BCCs since then and each time it is the same procedure - GP, waiting for a referral, waiting for an appointment then several visits to the hospital on various buses. It is really stressful and depressing.

My husband was recently diagnosed with several BCCs. His GP referred him to a local GP in a nearby practice who decided to operate. I drove my husband the short distance, waited for him and brought him home all in one afternoon. Wonderful! Now I understand funding is withdrawn and this facility will close. Disaster!

This is to confirm that, with effect from 9th July 2010, Keyworth Medical Practice will no longer be offering a surgical dermatology service for low risk BCCs in Keyworth. This is obviously a shame for the patients of Principia as it has been a valued service which was much more accessible to our population. The decision has been reluctantly taken by Keyworth as the national tariff price for this type of work has significantly reduced and therefore it is no longer an economically viable service to offer to the number of patients who meet the criteria to be seen under the new NICE guidance. All patients who are currently under their care will complete their treatment with Keyworth.
