"This department is absolutely shocking."

About: Rotherham Hospital / Accident and emergency

I felt like I was having a heart attack I could feel my heart beating irregularly and I was having pains down my left arm and it was going numb. I ended up calling an ambulance who first of all took an hour and a half from arriving to mine to getting me to a&e. When I got to a&e they refused to see me straight away there and so was shoved into the walk in centre waiting room still with pains in my chest. I then sat and waited an hour to be seen by a triage nurse who did a ecg and took some bloods.

I then was sat back in the waiting area and then waited another hour to see another triage nurse again who I basically just repeated what I’d already done with the first triage nurse and then was told to go back and sit in the waiting room again and wait for a doctor. I then waited another 2 hours before I was seen by the doctor. The doctor didn’t even bother to pull up any of my medical records on the computer and in fact didn’t even turn the computer on. The doctor basically advised I had no blood results yet and I had to wait again for them to come back. The doctor advised they thought I could have a thyroid problem with what symptoms I had despite not looking at any notes but refused to test me for my thyroid and advised it had to be done through a gp. I told the doctor I was in the middle of swapping gp’s and couldn’t get an app for another week when my medical records were through and was I meant to cope with these chest pains until I saw a gp? The doctor didn’t care and said they wouldn’t do the test simple. I didn’t get told what these bloods were for that they had already taken either. I then was sat back in the waiting room for over another hour and eventually the doctor just walked upto me in the waiting room and said the bloods they did (whatever they were as they wouldn’t say) were all fine and to just go home despite my chest pains and wouldn’t do anything else for me.

Dear Anonymous

I was very concerned to learn about your recent experience in our Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC), please be assured this is not what we would expect any of our patients to encounter. I have spoken with the UECC Quality and Governance Lead who would welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns in more detail. Should you wish to do so please contact the Patient Experience Team on 01709 424461 in the first instance.

Best wishes
