"My child needing treatment Paediatric Depament"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency Russells Hall Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Received a call to my work to say my child (9) had fell in the school toilets and had cut the back of his head open.   Left work and collected my child, heading straight towards Russell's Hall A& E Department.   On entering the temporary unit, (while the main one is being renovated) we were   greeted with a lovely Receptionist and told to take a seat.   We must of been in reception for a maximum of 20 minutes which I thought was fantastic.   A Nurse came to escort us to the Paediatric Department and we were then seated in the children's play area were my child enjoyed the iPad which they have available there.   After about no more than 10 minutes the Consultant greeted us.   This is where I felt we could have been treated better.   We were not introduced to the student Doctor nor asked if it was ok for her to be there.. my child was asked how he had gained the injury and he told the Consultant what had happened.   I then gave the Consultant the first aid slip that was given to me by the school, they then proceeded to telephone the school.   On returning from the call, they confirmed the same story as my child had told them but now there were two student Doctors! The Consultant then asked the one student to treat my childs injury while they and the other student observed.   You could clearly see my child was in pain so the consultant then assisted.   My point is! ? That as a parent I feel I should have been asked if I was happy for students to attend but also happy that a student was treating my child's injury. I understand Russell's Hall is a teaching Hospital however, shouldn't there be a duty of care to both child and parent for the choice to say no yet not given that option and made to feel uncomfortable.   I am thankful that my child was treated so quickly however, I was very unhappy that I was treated this way.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

We are glad that you found your first impressions of A&E to be a positive one and that your child was transferred to our Paediatric Department efficiently and in a timely manner.

As you know, we are a teaching hospital and patients have an important part to play. However, if carers or patients do not want students to be involved in their care, they are encouraged to let the lead nurse of doctor know.

It is disappointing to learn that the students weren’t introduced to you by the consultant and permission wasn’t obtained from yourself for them to treat your child. We apologise for any distress this caused and we have passed your comments on to the team in charge of the department.

We would welcome the opportunity for your concerns to be looked into in more detail. If you would like us to do this, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) ON Freephone 0800 073 0510 or e-mail pals@dgh.nhs.uk
